Lucero’s role as a Community Advocate is to support ScholarshipsA-Z through our response and new practices due to recent community events.

Lucero Barraza migrated from Mexico when she was eleven months old. A Sunnyside graduate, she completed her first years of undergraduate studies at Pima Community College. When she was about to transfer to a university, Lucero’s father was arrested and detained at the Eloy Detention Center. She immediately took on the financial responsibility of paying for his lawyer fees and spent all of her college savings with hopes of stopping his deportation. Unfortunately, her father was deported, which left her completely devastated.

It was her father’s deportation, her own personal hardship of pursuing higher education, and the constant attack on her community that motivated her to join ScholarshipsA-Z in 2016. She has been an Executive Team Member ever since and has helped with the programming of multiple educational programs, as well as contributing to the organization’s continuous growth.

Lucero transferred to the University of Arizona in the spring of 2018 and is currently pursuing a science degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. She plans to attend graduate school afterwards in hopes of becoming a marine biologist.
